Leading in nonprofit communications and advocacy journalism

Stefanie Weiss became vice president of communications and knowledge management at America’s Promise in the spring of 2015. She now oversees all internal and external communications for America’s Promise including publications, publicity and strategic message development, as well as the organization’s growing research portfolio. She also serves as lead strategist for all awareness efforts for the GradNation campaign, which is led by America’s Promise.

A proven leader in nonprofit communications and advocacy journalism, Stefanie most recently worked as chief communications and marketing officer at Points of Light, the largest organization in the world dedicated to volunteer service. She has also served as vice president for communications at, a nonprofit promoting second acts for the greater good; as communications director for Experience Corps (now AARP Experience Corps), where she helped create a brand known for service with impact on students' reading skills; and as communications director for the James MacGregor Burns Academy of Leadership at the University of Maryland.

An accomplished writer and editor, Stefanie has contributed many times to the Washington Post's Health & Science section, writing on midlife health topics. She has also worked as an editor of NEA Today, the National Education Association's magazine with a circulation of 2.5 million. And, as a staff member at People for the American Way, she co-authored a book, “Protecting the Freedom to Learn.” Stefanie got her start handling communications and public relations for the United Auto Workers, both in Detroit and during a groundbreaking organizing drive in Ithaca, N.Y.
