Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation
Presented by Julia Naime
REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) is a fairly new (developed at the 2009 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen -COP-15) mechanism that aims to reduce greenhouse gas emmissions by protecting forests and reducting deforestation. This mechanism artificially creates a market value for forests, based on their carbon storage capacity, REDD creates a cap and trade system, where carbon credits are obtained after giving financial support to conserve a forest.
Although REDDs main goal is to reduce climate change, its implementation will have other environmental and social impacts. This presentation will cover two of these impacts: its impact on biodiversity conservation and its impact on human rights.
This is a perfect webinar for those interested in conservation, environmental issues and human rights including students, development workers, conservationists and environmental policy workers.
