January 16, 2013 – Congratulations to Riddhi Desai (ISC Intern Summer 2012- present) and Kristen Youngs (Program and Research Intern Spring 2012), members of the inaugural class of the Mobilizer Academy, a national 12-month leadership development program by Mobilize.org. The Mobilizer Academy consists of virtual and in-person trainings to support Millennial change-makers leading civic and social ventures across the country. Mobilizer Academy participants will play a critical role in their communities as responsible leaders and advocates for social change, expanding the pipeline of next generation leadership joining the social sector.

Riddhi Desai is a rising junior at Rutgers University in New Brunswick. She is intending to graduate with a double major in Public Health and Psychology. She plans on pursuing a career in the area of public health or non-profit management. Riddhi has been involved in leadership positions in two student organizations on campus. She also is currently an Institute for Social Change Intern at the SISGI Group and is a frequent contributor on the organization’s blog, Notenoughgood.com. Her proposed project idea for the Mobilizer Academy was to create a leadership development and peer mentoring program for middle or high school girls in New Brunswick, NJ. She hopes to include university students from Rutgers to take part in this project.

Kristen Youngs is a a recent graduate of the University of North Texas, where she studied nonprofit management and specialized in kinesiology. After college, she left Dallas and secured an internship with the SISGI Group as a Program and Research Intern (what is now the ISC Internship). She now works at a growing nonprofit called Row New York, where she coaches and mentors under-resourced youth in the sport of rowing. The kids involved with Row New York generally come from under resourced areas. Kristen’s idea for the Mobilizer Academy is to ask the youth to voluntarily/anonymously hand in stories, poems, drawings, etc. to publish online. From there, she will take a similar approach she learned while writing for NotEnoughGood.com in addressing the issues that each story brings up. She has already seen first hand some of the things that the kids have to deal with on a daily basis, so I think that it will be a good way to raise awareness about things going on in most New Yorker’s “own backyards.”

We are excited to see individuals that have participated in our internship experience access additional opportunities for leadership development and to use their skills and abilities to create lasting social change.

To learn more about the Mobilizer Academy visit the Mobilize.org website.

Rather than spending a semester making copies, stuffing envelopes, or staring aimlessly from their desks, our interns develop a research area based upon their personal and professional interests, write 20-30 online critical research articles, learn to manage social media for social issues, lead online trainings, and gain skills in collaboration and communication across geographic boundaries. Leveraging cloud based technologies such as Google Apps, Podio, Dropbox, Skype and Mavenlink our interns receive feedback, mentoring, supervision and work with non-profit partners all online often from their dorms or homes. Participants have the same experience whether they are in Iowa, New York, Berlin or Accra creating a unique opportunity for students based in isolated communities, studying abroad, or in communities with limited job preparation opportunities for practical work experience.
